About HCG
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a heterodimeric glycoprotein hormone consisting of a non-covalently associated α-subunit (92 amino acids, identical to FSH-α and LH-α) and a hormone-specific β-subunit (145 amino acids, including a unique C-terminal peptide extension absent from LH-β). The molecule is heavily glycosylated, with N-linked oligosaccharides at positions Asn52 and Asn78 of the α-subunit and Asn13 and Asn30 of the β-subunit, plus four O-linked glycosylation sites on the β-subunit C-terminal peptide, accounting for approximately 30% of the total molecular weight. The glycosylation pattern profoundly affects plasma half-life and receptor binding kinetics.
Research applications for hCG include luteinizing hormone receptor (LHR) pharmacological characterization (hCG shares the LH receptor with LH and is used as a high-affinity surrogate), downstream cAMP and steroidogenesis pathway analysis in Leydig and granulosa cell models, glycoprotein hormone receptor binding dynamics studies, and comparative receptor assays between urinary-derived hCG and recombinant choriogonadotropin alpha preparations.
