About DSIP
Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide (DSIP) is a naturally occurring 9-amino acid neuropeptide first isolated from rabbit cerebral venous blood and identified as a compound that induced delta-wave (slow-wave) electroencephalographic patterns in early preclinical studies. The peptide contains a Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu sequence with an unusual internal secondary structure — the peptide has been proposed to exist in equilibrium between cyclic and open-chain forms through a Trp1-Glu9 hydrogen bond — though the bioactive conformation has not been definitively established. No specific receptor for DSIP has been cloned or fully characterized.
Research applications of DSIP encompass investigation of its effects on central nervous system neurotransmitter systems in preclinical models, LH and FSH pulsatility modulation studies in hypothalamic cell preparations, stress axis peptide interactions in cell culture models, and characterization of its corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) antagonism properties in pituitary cell systems. DSIP is used as a research probe for studying sleep-regulatory peptide biology and as a tool for investigating the pharmacological consequences of bioactive peptides lacking identified receptors.
