About BAC Water
Bacteriostatic water (BAC water) is sterile water for injection containing 0.9% (9 mg/mL) benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. Unlike sterile water for injection (SWFI), which is single-use only, BAC water's benzyl alcohol content inhibits bacterial growth and allows the vial to be accessed multiple times while maintaining sterility for research preparation workflows. Benzyl alcohol (phenylmethanol; CAS 100-51-6) functions as a bacteriostatic agent through disruption of bacterial membrane integrity at the concentrations used.
In laboratory research settings, bacteriostatic water is used as a solvent and diluent for lyophilized peptides, proteins, and research compounds in reconstitution procedures. Its bacteriostatic properties make it the preferred reconstitution vehicle for research vials requiring multiple sampling events over time.
