About BAC Water

Bacteriostatic water (BAC water) is sterile water for injection containing 0.9% (9 mg/mL) benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. Unlike sterile water for injection (SWFI), which is single-use only, BAC water's benzyl alcohol content inhibits bacterial growth and allows the vial to be accessed multiple times while maintaining sterility for research preparation workflows. Benzyl alcohol (phenylmethanol; CAS 100-51-6) functions as a bacteriostatic agent through disruption of bacterial membrane integrity at the concentrations used.

In laboratory research settings, bacteriostatic water is used as a solvent and diluent for lyophilized peptides, proteins, and research compounds in reconstitution procedures.
