About IGF-DES

IGF-1 DES (des(1-3)IGF-1) is a naturally occurring truncated form of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), in which the first three N-terminal amino acids (Gly-Pro-Glu) are removed. This truncation eliminates a significant portion of the binding domain for IGF binding proteins (IGFBPs) — particularly IGFBP-3 — while preserving full agonist activity at the IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R). As a result, DES-IGF-1 exhibits markedly reduced affinity for circulating IGFBPs in vitro (approximately 50-fold lower than full-length IGF-1), potentially increasing the free, biologically active fraction in experimental models.

Research interest in IGF-1 DES centers on its use as a tool to study IGF-1R signaling independently of IGFBP-mediated buffering, enabling investigation of receptor activation pharmacology without confounding IGFBP competition.
