About VIP

Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide (VIP) is a 28-amino acid neuropeptide belonging to the glucagon-secretin superfamily, characterized by an N-terminal histidine residue essential for receptor binding and a C-terminal amide group. VIP is encoded along with the related peptide PHM-27 (Peptide Histidine Methionine) from the same precursor protein (VPAC1/VPAC2 ligand precursor). The peptide acts at two primary receptor subtypes — VPAC1 (VIPR1) and VPAC2 (VIPR2) — which are class B GPCRs coupling primarily to Gs proteins and adenylyl cyclase, with some Gq involvement at certain concentrations.

Research applications of VIP encompass receptor binding assays at VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptor subtypes, comparative receptor selectivity studies relative to PACAP (pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide), downstream cAMP and PKA pathway characterization in receptor expression systems, and anti-inflammatory cytokine modulation studies in immune cell culture models. VIP is also investigated as a reference compound in enteric nervous system pharmacology research and circadian rhythm neuromodulation studies.
